With more than 40 years of experience under his tool belt, Roger Oakley leads H2O from strength to strength.
At the age of 16, Roger left school and joined O Seaman and Son Ltd under a Youth Training Scheme. Soon after, his potential and ability to learn landed him an apprenticeship with the company.
It was there he gained a love and fascination for the trade, as well as the skill and knowledge needed to be a quality plumber. Afterwards, he spent 13 years working self-employed where he built a wide – and happy – customer base.
In 2003, Roger Oakley set up H2O Heating & Plumbing, part of the O Seaman and Son Ltd group. He continued to work on-site delivering his expert services for his existing and new customers.
As the company grew, he naturally gained more time to begin focusing on managerial duties as Production Director. While he loved the practical side of the business, he recognised the benefits of putting the tools down.
He said: “I absolutely love plumbing and heating, but my body has told me I don’t need to be crawling on my knees anymore. So, the office suits me – especially in winter!”
As Production Director, Roger oversees the activity of the company, ensuring customers and employees are happy. His day-to-day jobs include pricing and tendering, but he can still be seen on-site running larger contracts.
While Roger – and his joints – enjoys his office-based role, there are parts of being on-site full time which he misses.
He added: “There’s nothing like the banter you get on-site – it’s probably everyone’s favourite part of working a trade.
“The team at H2O are brilliant, there’s a great atmosphere to every job and they’re a quality bunch to be around.
“The same goes for the office though. While there’s only a few of us, we always have a laugh and the days tend to fly by.”
Outside of work, Roger’s life is family and football. Whether it’s attending meetings as vice chair of Needham Market FC or watching each child play football, he’s never far from a pitch!
