5 signs your boiler needs replacing

Replacing your boiler can be an expensive and stressful job for any homeowner – but in reality it is more often than not a cost-saving exercise that cuts bills and adds value to your home.

Biting the bullet and accepting it’s time to make a change can be a difficult decision to make – so here are five of our top signs your boiler has come to the end of its life.

1. Odd smells

If you ever pick up on any unusual smells from your gas boiler, it is important to call a Gas Safe engineer.

While there can often be a simple fix, a lot of the time it’s a sure sign your boiler needs replacing. That’s especially true if there has been a gas leak.

Remember, if your boiler ever emits an egg-like, sulphurous smell, turn it off immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

2. Poor performance

If you’re frequently finding it takes longer to heat your radiators, or you regularly need to bleed them, it could be because your boiler has reached the end of its life.

This could simply be due to a minor fault – but continued poor performance or breakdowns are often a sign its time to install a replacement.

Again, it’s a good idea to call out registered engineers like those in the H2O Heating & Plumbing team to take a closer look.

3. Leaks

Any water leaks around your boiler require immediate action to prevent damage to your home.

What starts as a simple leak can quickly turn into something much more serious. So it’s best to get it checked out straight away.

It’s also important to remember that leaks lessen the energy efficiency of your home and contribute to higher bills.

4. Loud noises

Older boilers can be quite noisy at times. And that shouldn’t really be a cause for alarm.

When you should become concerned is if you begin to hear new sounds or changes in volume. Chances are this will be sorted with another simple fix, but it’s not worth taking any risks.

Loud sounds likes banging or continuous vibrations should always be investigated by an engineer.

5. High bills

Energy efficiency isn’t just about saving the planet, it’s about saving your pocket from unnecessary expense too.

If your bills continue to creep up, it’s a good sign your boiler isn’t very energy efficient.

Replacing your boiler can be expensive, granted – but it will often save you a lot of money, time and hassle in the long run by opting for a higher-grade, modern alternative.
