Ensuring your home has a good heating system in place isn’t just important for keeping you warm, but keeping your bills low. But with so many different kinds available, how do you find the right one?
If you’re considering an upgrade, here are our top tips.
Gas boilers
Gas boilers are the most common boiler type in the UK, specifically gas combi boilers which provide both hot water and central heating.
They are a great, affordable choice for homes which have a natural gas grid connection.
Newer models are very energy efficient and are easy to service – but there is a drawback in terms of sustainability.
As a fossil fuel, gas boilers are not sustainable in the long term – so you’ll need to weigh up the pros and cons if it is one of your top concerns.
Electric boilers
Electric boilers solve the issue of fossil fuels and are common in new build homes.
Just like with gas, older models have had issues regarding inefficiency, although newer models are improving.
The key thing to note about electric heating however is the price. It is significantly more expensive than gas – especially considering how bills are continuing to rise.
That does however make them a great choice for homes with solar power.
Heat pumps
Heat pumps are becoming increasingly common in UK homes. And for good reason.
Not only are they incredibly energy efficient, but they can also be carbon-free dependent on how they are powered.
There are two types of heat pumps, air-to-air and air-to-water, with the latter being a great replacement for gas boilers in homes with a “wet” central heating system.
Heat pumps are commonly powered by electricity but are far more efficient than older electric boilers. That’s especially true in newer, better insulated homes.
